HMA — Do You Need A Web Site?

Do you need a website?
YES, If you are a business in my opinion you must have a website. Today it is so easy and in many cases inexpensive to have a website it really does not make sense to not have one. However, you need more than just a website. You need a marketing system and a website is just 1 part of that system. Your website is the equivalent to having a salesperson available 24 hours a day 7 days a week presenting the exact information you want to get across to your customers. An marketing system is something no business can really be without. We will go over the terms, options, pricing models, tips, tricks, etc… and will help you work through the process, as well as, how to work with hosting companies, developers, freelancers, and more…

Here is tip # 1 actually I would call it rule #1 as it is that important!!!
Rule # 1. You must, I repeat must, own your domain name. You can have others build and maintain your web site in fact as a business owner I would highly recommend having someone else take care of the website so you can focus on your business, but you need to own the domain. Do not let anyone trick you into letting them register your web site’s domain name for you.

Why? Because they will be able to hold you hostage. I would say it would be a major red flag if your webmaster, developer, “friend”, or whoever is doing your website wants or requires that they register the domain for you in their name. I would go so far as recommending that you never do business with these type of businesses or person. You are very likely to have major issues and typically they are not someone that should be dealing with your company’s image. Let’s face it your company’s website is a major part of your companies image and you should be extremely picky and careful about who you have creating and maintaining your company’s image.

If they own the domain name to your company’s website then they own your company’s website not you. They can put whatever they want to on the website, allow or not allow anyone access including not allowing you access to what you thought was your company’s website. Let’s just pretend for a moment that they do not plan to keep you hostage and they were just “trying to be helpful” by taking care of this for you. I would say they at the very least are very naive and are most likely very reckless. They are putting your company at risk for no reason. What if something where to happen to them or their business? What if they got sued, divorced, or in an accident and went into a coma? You could and most likely would lose complete access to “your website” at least temporarily if not permanently. I hope you can see how dangerous and risky this can be.

It cost less than $10 a year and about 5 minutes to register a domain name. Why risk your entire business when this is just too simple and inexpensive to do yourself. If you are paying more than $10 a year for your domain name registration you are most likely paying too much. Of course web hosting, design, etc… will cost more we are just talking about registering and having the rights to use your domain name. For example this domain is vomers.com and it cost me about $10 a year.

You can register your domain at one of the following domain registrars or just do a search for domain registrar:

NameCheap

Dotster

Verio
